YESYESNONO are cool. So it was very cool to talk to them about their cool sounding show insert slogan here, about the world of advertising and longing. What drove you to make [insert slogan here]? I started making a show about 'fictions' broadly, and as part of that I watched a bunch of adverts, particularly Volvo adverts. And I thought they were so fascinating. So I decided I wanted to make a show about advertising specifically. Then as we made it, the show slowly became a meditation not just on advertising but also on longing, and the role longing plays in our lives. I also wanted to make a show with live electronic music. So. That happened. Tell us a bit about YESYESNONO as a company. We make stuff that sits somewhere between theatre and live art. Nobody plays characters and there isn't really a story. We use a lot of audience participation and we do a lot of thinking about what we want our audience participation to feel like. When you participate in a YESYESNONO show you bring nothing but yourself, and your own presence and personality gives the show something. We try and make work that presents a problem, that human connectivity, seen in audience participation, offers a solution to. There are so many ways to tell stories etc. why theatre? Because in theatre you have an audience sat there and you can talk to them and say HEY THERE COME ONSTAGE AND CHAT ABOUT THIS STUFF WITH ME. And you can't do that in a cinema. I've tried. What was the last show you saw that you think everyone should see? Oh gosh. Gob Squad's latest show: 'Creation (Pictures for Dorian)'. That. Is. A. Show. They work with artists in the local area before and then bring them into the show. Its a heartbreaking exploration of producing yourself in your art and watching yourself decay. I loved it! Theatre making is hard and, although we try our best to work around them, it has it’s limits. If you had an unlimited budget, a unquestioningly devoted audience and all the time in the world, what show would you make? I would do a massive adaptation of the New Testament Gospels. I'm a massive Theology nerd and I love religious stories, particularly the Gospels. I would love to do a huge adaptation with loads of people and pyrotechnics and gravity manipulators and real magic and live doves. And then do it in a huge cathedral. That would be crazy. What else in the Incoming Festival line-up are you excited to see? All of them! If I had to pick then I guess I can't wait to see Malaprop because I've not seen them before. Also Kopfkino and Poltergeist Theatre. Then there's obviously ace people this thisegg and barrel organ and even though i've already seen those shows I might see them again! insert slogan here is on at HOME on 2 July, after A Clown Show About Rain! A Clown Show About Rain by Silent Faces is a part of Incoming Festival at New Diorama, London and HOME, Manchester on 28 June and 2 July.
