We got to talk to Matt and Julian from Rhum and Clay about their show Testosterone. The play is about writer and collaborator Kit Redstone’s ‘desire to explore his experiences of masculinity as a trans man’. Read on for a their take on the show, which will be on at the Pleasance after Follow Suit.
Tell us a bit about your show: TESTOSTERONE is a collaboration with transmale writer and performer Kit Redstone, and centres around the first time he steps into a male gym changing room at the age of 33. The show is about many things, not least of all of what it means to be a man and the universal challenges that now face Kit. It's a hallucinatory journey through the fantasies and icons of man, all stemming from a seemingly mundane moment of getting changed in a gym. It is at times raucously funny, and painfully sad. We hope everyone finds relevance in this story of a quest for an identity. What sort of theatre do you make? Matt: The theatre we make is collaborative and playful, the style is often physical but can shift and change depending on who we collaborating with and what story we are telling is. Julian: We make innovative and accessible theatre. At the core of what we do is storytelling, and the style of our work is always in reaction to what story we are telling. That being said, having trained at Ecole Lecoq in Paris, our work is always highly visual and physical. What’s the most important thing that theatre should be/do/have? Matt: The most important thing theatre can be is relevant, it should matter, the play should be performed because that story needs to be told. Julian: It must engage and provoke it's audience, otherwise it isn't alive. There's nothing worse than seeing a piece of theatre that could feasibly play out without an audience in the room. Theatre should be a silent communication and encounter between the performers and the audience. What shows at the fringe are you most looking forward to? Jamie wood: I am tree Not I: Touretts Hero Wild Bore: Zoe coombs Marr The North The North: Chris Harrisson Fleabag: Soho theater Me and robin hood: Sean dale jones Testosterone is on at Pleasance P2 from 2nd - 27th (Not performing on 14th, 20th & 28th) at 5pm. |
