We spoke to Heather from Awkward Talkers about their show Chips and Cheese which will be venturing to the fringe for a stint in the middle of the festival alongside Follow Suit! Read on to see what she had to say about their show… Tell us a bit about your show: Chips and Cheese is our original new play written by Garth Oates. It's our debut production and we are so excited to share it with the world. The play uses comedy, physical theatre and satire to explore a number of themes including the gap between millennials and their grandparents, Scottish vs English stereotypes and the debate surrounding consent within our "Geordie Shore" drinking culture. In an almost surreal/sitcom style Chips and Cheese is, in our opinion, the perfect mix of comedy and drama and we hope others think so too! What sort of theatre do you make? The theatre we make comes from our opinion that it should be an escape for the audience. So Awkward Talkers use lightning fast dialogue with comedy as a base on which we build our more serious themes upon. As mentioned before, we use our physical theatre experience to enhance the text but not so much that it becomes a physical theatre show. We like to draw on topical events and politics in a satirical way that allows the audience to laugh at the situations the world is in. (If we don't laugh we will cry eh?) What’s the most important thing that theatre should be/do/have? Theatre should be entertaining...for everyone. In our opinion that is the most important thing. We like the idea that anyone from the stay at home mum of three, to the heart surgeon in london, the sixteen year old failing his gcse's to the ww2 veteran can all have a sit, have a giggle and have something to talk about after the show. What shows at the fringe are you most looking forward to? Police Cops in Space!! We saw the original last year and thought it was one of the best pieces of theatre we've ever seen. We'd like to see 5 Guys Chillin'. Mainly we like to take each day as it comes, we appreciate good flyering and will look forward to meeting other companies on the mile and forming new relationships! Chips and Cheese is on from 14-19th August at 1.10pm at theSpace on the Mile. Comments are closed.
